The Nebb: 2005 Nebbiolo/Cabernet

The Nebbiolo and Cabernet were kept separate from picking until bottling. The Nebbiolo, Clone 110, was grown on the devigorating sandy soils of the Blewitt Springs sub-region, at an approximate altitude of 100 metres. It has been hand harvested and hand sorted to remove any unripe bunches. It underwent ten percent whole bunch fermentation in open fermenters. It was pressed at two Baume and placed into one new French Oak, ultra fine grain chateau barrel, and one old French oak barrel. It has been left on oak for two years.

The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown from the Clone LC10 from fifth generation Mclaren Vale grape grower, Ross “Nat” McMurtrie. Nat likes to keep things simple and clean in the vineyard resulting in Cabernet that is ripe but retains varietal characteristics. It has been pressed at two Baume and placed into one new American Oak, ultra fine grain chateau barrel and left for two years.

Tasting Notes

The combination of the Nebbiolo and Cabernet result in a wine with a good depth of colour and slight orange hues. The nose has an earthy, tarry richness balanced by mandarin peel and floral notes. The palate is full with jubey flavours and an earthiness balanced by mineral acidity and powdery tannin.
